Postcard Poetry Contest: 3rd Place

We lit fireworks in an arid cornfield—
Joy reckless as gasoline,
your laugh louder than the regulations of drought.
July cracked open like a jawbone.
I carried your hand like it was bail money.
Cicadas shrieked like unpaid preachers.
You kissed me once,
said, “Some things ignite prettier when brief.”
The flames approved.
So did I.
