Postcard Poetry Contest: 3rd Place

written by Rashan Speller

We lit fireworks in an arid cornfield—

Joy reckless as gasoline,

your laugh louder than the regulations of drought.

July cracked open like a jawbone.

I carried your hand like it was bail money.

Cicadas shrieked like unpaid preachers.

You kissed me once,

said, “Some things ignite prettier when brief.”

The flames approved.

So did I.
